Year 4 Curriculum Map

What is the book-led curriculum?

  • Reading for purpose is at the core of the curriculum.
  • Each unit has a driving book, supplementary texts and bespoke knowledge organisers that enable pupils to enrich their knowledge in a progressive way.
  • Children read for purpose at the start of every session.
  • Learning is a mastery of a skill. The skills are progressive through the year and key stages.

Reading For Purpose.

  • Each unit has a “driving book” that is the catalyst for imparting knowledge.
  • Certain pages are read at the start of each session, which feed into a discussion.
  • Driving books are directly linked to either History, Geography or Science.
  • For other subjects such as Art and D&T, supplementary texts are provided. These are also read at the start of every session and bring knowledge that the teaching of skills will build upon.
  • Every unit has a bespoke knowledge organiser - These are used to build long term knowledge for each element of the curriculum.
  • These knowledge organisers are colour-coded for each subject.

How has the curriculum been developed?

  • Books have been selected to be engaging and age-appropriate.
  • Units have been placed to enable knowledge to be taught before it is needed for the Delta Reading Strategy.
  • The Long Term Plan has been devised so that skills are progressive across a unit, a year group and a phase.
  • PHSE curriculum coverage follows JIGSAW – a comprehensive programme that ensures we are providing children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.
  • RE curriculum coverage follows the Wakefield agreed Syllabus for Religious Education – a programme that engages pupils in systematic enquiry into significant human questions which religion and worldviews address. Our children develop the understanding and skills needed to appreciate varied responses to questions, as well as develop responses of their own.
  • French curriculum coverage follows Le Jolie Ronde – a comprehensive programme that provides our children with the opportunity to excel and enjoy a fun & positive approach to language learning.

Y4 Long Term Plan:
